The individuality of each handmade piece make Tierra Negra a genuine must-have, and recently The Guardian Weekend Magazine refered to it as one of the best pans out. Each piece is made in the Andes, using ancestral and inherited traditions: Each piece is carefully moulded into shape by hand, not spun on a wheel. Then another, finer layer of clay is applied as a glaze. After an initial aeration stage each piece is fully dried in the sun, and then the beautiful black sheen is achieved by intricate burnishing of the clay before it's finally fired. Due to clay's great insulating properties, the top of the pot remains cool while the bottom is hot - so you can take it from your hob top to the table without an oven glove (- check first!) The pots remain warm for up to an hour after removal from a heat source, so they're great for second helpings! Suitable for use on gas, radiant, solid plate, ceramic and aga rayburn heat sources and in the oven, under the grill, microwave and dishwasher safe.
Before being used for the first time the cookware should be thoroughly cleaned with washing-up liquid and a sponge to remove any residues left after the firing process. Each piece should then be filled three-quarters full with water and placed in an oven for 30 minutes at 200˚C or Gas Mark 6. The slight porosity of the surface serves to enhance the flavour of cooked foods after the vessels have been used several times. It is recommended that wooden cooking implements be used with Tierra Negra rather than metal ones.
